What Is Wadi Mujib?
Jordan's dramatic canyon and biosphere reserve. Trails, entrance fee, and how to get there.
Overview of Wadi Mujib
Wadi Mujib is a deep canyon in Jordan, often called the "Grand Canyon of Jordan." The Mujib River has cut through sandstone cliffs over millions of years, creating a narrow gorge that eventually meets the Dead Sea. The area is protected as the Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve, managed for conservation and sustainable tourism. Visitors can hike the famous Siq Trail (a water hike through the canyon), the drier Ibex Trail, or join guided canyoning trips. For directions, see Where Is Wadi Mujib in the menu.
Access is by paid entrance fee. After paying at the gate, you go to the Adventure Center to register for the Siq or get information for other trails. The reserve and trails operate within set opening hours; the Siq is typically open from spring to fall.
Geography and Nature
Wadi Mujib lies on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. The canyon runs from the highlands down to the sea, with the Mujib River flowing through it. The reserve protects wildlife and plant life; the steep cliffs and water create a unique environment. The Siq Trail follows the river upstream through the narrowest part of the gorge. The Ibex Trail offers views from above without entering the water. Location details and how to get there are in the menu under Where Is Wadi Mujib.
The area can be hot in summer; bring water and sun protection. For the Siq you need water shoes and a change of clothes. Check opening hours and entrance fee before you visit. The Adventure Center is your first stop inside the reserve.
Activities and Visiting
The main activities are the Siq Trail (water hike), the Ibex Trail (dry hike), and canyoning. Your entrance fee typically covers access and the Siq and Ibex trails; canyoning may cost extra. Start at the Adventure Center to register and get life jackets for the Siq. Plan your trip using the menu for directions and opening hours.
